Star Trek (Season 3) DVD Review

Nominated for four Emmys, including Outstanding Dramatic Series two times in its short three-year stint, Star Trek is a true legend of television history. The brainchild of former L.A. policeman Gene Roddenberry, the show premiered in Fall 1966 only to be cancelled after three seasons due to lackluster ratings. But it may well have been NBC's network executives who were the cause of the low ratings as they allotted a less than desirable time slot for the show. When Star Trek moved into syndication, its reruns captured the science-fiction imagination of an entirely new audience, catapulting the Star Trek franchise to new heights. Its newfound popularity would, in the decades to come, spawn novels, comic books, six full-length feature films, and reams of merchandise as fans clamored for anything Star Trek-related. Beginning in the 1980's, spin-offs of the show began to appear such as Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise...

Star Trek, the original TV series, follows the adventurous exploits of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they "boldly go where no man has gone before..." The spaceship Enterprise is led by Captain James Tiberius Kirk (William Shatner), an Earth-born astronaut who often exhibits the charm, leadership, and creativity necessary for the mission's survival. Kirk is joined by Lt. Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), a Vulcan-born retired commander and theoretical scientist. Chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) rounds out the main cast of Star Trek which includes a plethora of supporting crew with multiple guest appearances and cameo roles. Together, the crew of U.S.S. Enterprise seeks to carry out its mission: "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations..." It's this pioneering attitude, coupled with imaginative sci-fi worlds, that provides Star Trek with its nostalgic allure - especially these episodes from the original TV series, widely regarded as the most popular of all the TV series...

Dvds Tv Series

The Star Trek (Season 3) DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the season premiere "Spock's Brain" in which the Enterprise is intercepted by a mysterious, unidentified spacecraft. An alien from the ship beams herself onto the bridge of the Enterprise and renders the entire crew unconscious. When they awaken, McCoy informs Kirk that the alien has confiscated Spock's brain. Now, the Enterprise is tasked with locating Spock's brain before his body decays... Other notable episodes from Season 3 include "Plato's Stepchildren" in which the inhabitants of the planet Platonius take advantage of the Enterprise crew's goodwill in order to enslave them via telekinesis, and "The Way to Eden" in which the Enterprise is hijacked by a band of Earthlings in pursuit of the mythical planet Eden, a garden-like world of health, purity, and happiness...

Bringing Out What's in a Child Academically

"To me, education is a leading out of what is already there in the pupil's soul."
Muriel Spark

The past experiences of two beautiful daughters illustrates this inspirational teaching quote perfectly.

Dvds Tv Series

Case #1:

Bringing Out What's in a Child Academically

A sensational little girl in Michigan had lost motivation in her school work. Her mother was quite aware that she was very bright but needed suggestions in assisting her to confidently express her competencies. After making use of accelerated assignments, this darling little genius realized that an advanced concept (three grades above her level to be exact) was within her realm of ability. That day, her dad received a rather enthusiastic call at work from her - shouting about her latest accomplishment.

Case #2:

The second young phenom had already been identified as an accelerated learner from a teacher some time ago. This child was so talented, a teacher had offered to work with her personally. However, since contact was lost, this gifted learner was left to fend for herself in her new classroom and she too lost her drive. Her parents quickly made arrangements for her to receive the resources necessary to get her back on track. She did and as a result of spending time with people who reflected back to her who SHE truly was, she now has aspirations of early college enrollment.

These are examples of what can happen when the essence of a child has been reached, nurtured and allowed to flourish scholastically. In both cases, once these brilliant youngsters were given a channel to fully manifest their gifts they now sit with a new perspective or a renewed interest in academics.

Reaching children really isn't so difficult once you ascertain where they are in their education and how it is they PREFER to take in information. Are they visual, audio or kinesthetic learners? Combine this bit of information with a little creativity and ANY child can perform above their grade level - if it's just ONE grade in advance.

Generally, many parents aren't aware that a curriculum takes into account the capability of an "average" learner. Therefore it is quite conceivable to improve or even accelerate a child once a parent invests just a little, concentrated effort.

I Challenge You To...

Pick out one exciting way to enrich academics in your child's life. Here are some suggestions:

o DVD (Standards Deviants; Schlessinger Media Series; BBC Shop; Bill Nye;)
o Electronic Educational Enrichment Toy (V-tech; Leap Frog; Fisher Price)
o Museums, science or nature centers in your community
o A theatrical play based on literature with which your child is familiar or literature that you intend to encourage your child to read outside of the classroom.

o Participation in a children's book club

These are just a few to get the ball rolling! Remember, it only takes a few minutes out of the week and as always - have fun with it!

The Best Play In Youth Football

The answer may surprise you. Many youth football teams attempt to emulate what the coach has seen on TV the past week or what the head coach ran as a high school player 20 years ago. Unfortunately what works at the College or Pro level on TV often doesn't work very well at the youth level. The coach's high school system may have worked well for his team 20-30 years ago with 6 days a week practices and fleet running backs, but fails miserably at the youth level.

At the youth level our job as coaches is to teach the kids how to block and tackle safely and effectively. We teach them how to get into good athletic stances as well as the base rules and strategies. Our most important job should be to make football fun for the player and coach our teams up to their full potential.

Dvds Tv Series

However, you can have fun and win at the same time. In fact most players that play on perennial losing teams lose their love of the game and quit. That is one reason I developed these coaching materials for my own 400 kid organization, so that our coaches would be competent enough to coach the kids to their God given potential. To allow our teams to play competitively so the kids would stay engaged in our program. In fact my materials are filled with how to make practices both well organized and fun.

The Best Play In Youth Football

Most of the plays or schemes the typical youth coach has in his playbook are not designed to the talent level of most youth teams. I see teams with no speed often trying to run sweeps, I see teams with kids that can't throw or catch throwing (trying to throw) 20 yard passes. I see teams running bootlegs with very slow quarterbacks. I see teams running a dive play with no lead blocker into the heart of youth defenses. I see teams trying reverses against well disciplined teams for huge losses. I see pass patterns with 3-4 and even 5 receivers. I see teams trying to get a 9 year old to read two different defenders on option plays etc etc etc.

I rarely see: good lead off-tackle plays, one or two receiver pass patterns, optional run and pass plays, trap plays, pulling, double teams, wedge blocking, designed plays to draw the defense off-sides, unbalanced formations, motion, and great sportsmanship.
In youth football each year is different; you will not always have a big team or have a very fast "feature back" that can outrun everyone on a sweep play. Unlike the colleges or pros, you don't have 100s of kids from all across the country to choose from or 20-40 hours a week practice time. In my mind the team that wins because they just happen to have the fastest kid in the league and he outruns everyone on sweeps and kick returns is a joke, a luck of the draw thing. Football is a team game and a well coached team won't give up sweeps for touchdowns or ever kick deep ti that speedster. My first team defense has not given up a sweep for a score in over 5 years.

I've coached youth football for about 15 years and one play that we have always been able to run effectively regardless of the size or talent of the team I've had is the lead
off-tackle power. It can be run by out of nearly any formation, I love it out of the Single Wing with 4 lead blockers and a double team block at the point of attack. While it isn't a terribly sexy play, it gets you 4-5 yards every down in most cases and sets up "home run" complementary plays like the trap, play action pass or wing reverse. Most youth teams are set up to stop the sweep, the "holy grail" play for most youth teams. Other defenses try to shut down the "dive" in the gaps next to the center. Very few youth football defenses are set up to stop even an average off-tackle play.

If the other team gives you the off-tackle, take it until they over-commit, then run the home run play. In our Championship game in 2003 the other team was so concerned about taking away our inside "wedge" play, they left open the off-tackle. We started the game with 7 straight tailback off-tackle plays to our strong side and scored. The very next series they moved out to our off-tackle hole and we ran wedge for a 65 yard score on first down. Then they tried to stop the wedge play and moved everyone up and we ran the wedge play action pass for a 60 yard score. We were up 46-0 in the third quarter when they finally just gave up and tried to run the clock. Both the wedge and off tackle plays can be run well by very average skilled kids.

In another game the defensive team was set up to stop the sweep and wedge plays but again were giving us the off-tackle play. We run no-huddle so we get many more snaps in than most youth teams. In that game we had 71 snaps, of which 51 were off-tackle strong plays. We were getting our 4-5 yards every time, nothing real big, but we did get some very big gains and touchdowns from blocking back traps, wing reverses (2 TDs) and TB run pass option (pass for TD). So we scored 5 touchdowns and out of the 5 TD's, 4 were in excess of 20 yards. We were only stopped on downs once and we fumbled once too. We were 2-2 passing for 56 yards and a TD. Now how much fun was that for our 3 tailbacks that shared duty at the tailback position that day and for our pulling guards? They all had a blast, so did our place kickers, and the 4 other kids that had TDs playing non-tailback positions. Oh yeah, our defense had fun too, they could play with abandon since we were moving the ball at will on offense.

The net is, the off-tackle play at the youth level is the hardest play to stop, yet few teams try and perfect it. It takes little talent to run the play, no studs required. In my Single Wing Offense, we practice that play more than any other. We block it a variety of ways so we know it will work and we will run it, regardless of what kind of defense we face. Our kids can run the off-tackle in their sleep, we often start our practices with the "Power Hour" as Steve Calande calls it. We run our off-tackle strong power for 30-40 minutes on air, fit and freeze and then with players holding hand shields going 100%. Ye,s just one play often makes up half of our offensive practice time.

If your team is doing poorly, you don't need a trick play or new offense (what most coaches panic and do) you need to get perfect at running the off-tackle lead power play.
We know we are playing a good team when they come out and try and establish the
off-tackle play. Of all the videos I've seen from youth teams from all over the country, regardless of the offensive set or personnel, the best teams always have a good off-tackle play. It isn't sexy but it does the trick and it sets up everything else in your offense.

Don't worry about putting in a bunch of fancy "trick" plays before you get your off-tackle play down perfectly.

The Twilight Saga Movies - How Many Will There Be?

The movie industry has seen a multitude of film sagas in recent decades. Hollywood finds many sources for its films in literature. The Twilight Saga movies are a perfect example of this. A good book can lead to a successful motion picture version of the story.

The Twilight Saga is the latest film franchise to have the spotlight. On 30th June, Summit Entertainment will release its next film, Eclipse, in this series. One of the questions circling among fans on the Internet is whether or not the final book of the series, Breaking Dawn, will be broken up into at least two films.

Dvds Tv Series

Large movie production companies are splitting up popular works of fiction into multiple films. Such is the case with the final installment of the Harry Potter series. Possibly the most successful film franchise ever based on literature, the final Harry Potter novel will be released in several parts as well.

The Twilight Saga Movies - How Many Will There Be?

Many people might like to see such series continue on. The Twilight saga itself is laced with subplots and characters that could possibly be used to produce successful spin-off films and other franchises.

Twilight Saga author, Stephanie Meyer, has already written several spin-off novels that deal with main characters of the films. Some of them spend more time on lesser characters that only make a brief appearance in the novels and films.

Statistically speaking, young adults make up the largest percentage of the theater-going population. Like Harry Potter, The Twilight Saga centers on young adults in its novels. The main character is an attractive young teenager who is dealing with adolescence and growing up in a single parent household. Hollywood knows this, and by adapting these novels into major motion pictures, it is betting on the connection the story will have with its young adult audience.

There are many film franchises in Hollywood; not all of them are based on literature. Star Trek is one of the longest running film franchises ever. Most recently, Hollywood produced a prequel to the first film that examines some of the main characters in the series when they were much younger. Some might argue that this is another growing trend in Hollywood. The idea is that rebooting a dying franchise can be profitable. The recent reboot of Star Trek turned out to be profitable and gained a lot of critical success as well.

As in any industry, businesses are faced with the question of how to make more money and grow the company. As of now, the Twilight Saga films released have proved to be a very successful business decision. Whether the remaining films currently in production are successful or not, there are story lines within the Twilight saga that Hollywood may wish to adapt into major motion pictures.

The Twilight Saga fan base has grown considerably. As in the case of Star Trek, there are conventions every year where such fans can get together and share their interest in the material. There are already several websites devoted to the Twilight fans. In fact, there is a traveling convention that tours the United States this year. With a growing fan base, there may be no limit to the number of books or films that can be produced in the years to come.

Jesus Of Nazareth (Movie Review)

Since Thomas Edison's invention of the modern cinema, countless filmmakers have endeavored to produce a moving picture that accurately chronicles the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. Aside from Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, which chronicled only a part of the life and crucifixion of Jesus, Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth is the greatest of all. Originally aired as a television mini-series (it's over six hours in length), the film closely adheres to the word-for-word accounts found in the Gospels.

The story begins with Joseph (Yorgo Voyagis) and Mary's (Olivia Hussey) reception of God's angels. Each is told of the child that Mary will bear and what his name will be. The scene where Mary receives her message is an especially powerful piece of cinematic artistry with no dialogue - only a warm light surrounding Mary as she bows in prayer. The film holds true to every utterance in the Gospels, recounting the census, Herod's decree, and the travels of Joseph and Mary.

Dvds Tv Series

As Jesus (Robert Powell) develops into adulthood, we witness the beginning of his ministry. He calls on his disciples, teaches through use of parables, and displays many miracles. Zeffirelli makes powerful use of the camera by having his star, Powell, never be caught blinking in any scene. At first, it's barely noticeable, and it takes some time to figure out what is so different. But this absence of the uniformly common trait of blinking creates a divine aura around the character of Jesus. It draws in the audience by creating an emotional sense of peace that lends credibility to the onscreen portrayal of Jesus.

Jesus Of Nazareth (Movie Review)

From beginning to end, Jesus of Nazareth offers a plethora of memorable scenes and exchanges which are more attributable to the Gospels and the actual life of Jesus rather than brilliant direction and acting ability. But the subject matter is aptly handled by a great production team and an endless array of first-rate actors and actresses, among them are - Mary Magdalene (Anne Bancroft), the Centurion (Ernest Borgnine), Simon Peter (James Farentino), Balthazar (James Earl Jones), Joseph of Arimathea (James Mason), Nicodemus (Laurence Olivier), Caiaphas (Anthony Quinn), and many others... Overall, the individual performances come together to form a rich tapestry of wisdom and intrigue that will leave its audience with much upon which to reflect and ponder.

If you believe Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah (which this author does), then Jesus of Nazareth serves as a form of meditation and renewal of one's spiritual connection to God. But if you don't view Jesus in this way, no other film will leave you in such awe of the profound influence promulgated by a humble, sandal-clan man from a province on the outskirts of mighty Rome - an influence that has completely dominated the world for almost two thousand years to the present day.

For spiritual, philosophical, and cinematic reasons, Jesus of Nazareth is a definite must-see film for the ages...
