Absolutely Free Movie Downloads - Time to End This Hoax

Gone are the days of watching just previews and snapshots of movies on the internet. Modern internet technologies are giving internet users the power to watch movies online, along with facilities for downloads. Earlier MP3s, trailers and music videos had dominated the download arena in entertainment. The commercial possibilities for movies on the internet was initially identified and utilized by movie rental service providers. But with higher bandwidths being made available by internet service providers (ISPs), and with the increased popularity of file sharing networks, more and more online companies have started providing movies for download.

It is only recently that these download services have been made available absolutely free of cost to users. Even today most commercial websites have their download services which require users to download movies by pay per download scheme and some others require their users to pay an initial amount for downloading unlimited movies. But the situation is now changing with more and more websites offering absolutely free movie downloads.

Dvds Tv Series

Websites offering absolutely free movie downloads often use a combination of various technologies to provide easy downloads. One such technology adopted is using codecs for reducing the size of movies, as original packaging of movies in DVDs has file sizes of 4GB or more. In the original DVD format, it will take an enormous amount of time for users to download a full movie.

Absolutely Free Movie Downloads - Time to End This Hoax

With codecs such as DivX and XviD, the quality of movies remain the same even after being compressed from their original DVD formats. Before downloading, it will be better to make sure that the movies you are downloading are either in Xvid or DivX format as these offer better quality video and audio with less file sizes in the range of 600-700MB. All you are required to do is to install in your computer the corresponding codec used for video compression. These codecs are available for free download from their respective websites.

While there are many methods for absolutely free movie downloads online, the easiest of all methods is using a file sharing network such as BitTorrent or Kazaa. Although movie downloads have increased, it can be seen that it has not yet completely affected the DVD market, although sales have fallen. The main factor which works in favor of absolutely free movie downloads is the widespread availability of broadband internet even in remote corners of the world. Other reasons which are promoting these free downloads are the savings in terms of time and money, which is otherwise required by movie lovers in physically searching and buying movies from rental shops.

7 Reasons Why You Should Read Fiction

I'm a bit of an oddball among writers, because I don't condemn the television set. On the contrary, I think everyone, and especially serious writers, should watch plenty of TV, including TV comedies and dramas, because the audio/visual format provides a perspective that you can't get from reading a novel. This flies in the face of the common rant, that TV is a scourge that should be eliminated from the entertainment landscape.

On the other hand, the recent trend has been to watch more TV and more movies and read less, and when one reads, to read non-fiction instead of fiction. The reasons given range from "Reading is hard" to "Novels are uninformative." But what most people don't realize is that the written word, and fiction in particular, provides benefits you can't get from other media. For example:

Dvds Tv Series

  1. Reading fiction can help you improve your people skills. A 2008 study by Raymond Mar found that people who read more fiction score higher on tests of empathy and social acumen, and that people who read more non-fiction score lower. This is perhaps because through fiction, you experience the characters' social interactions and relationships in a way impossible with most non-fiction.
  2. Reading fiction stimulates the imagination. While reading fiction, your mind reconstructs each scene in much more detail than the author described it. It does so by visualizing the non-existent people and places of the story, often basing these visualizations on actual people and places you've seen. This is the human ability to imagine, to daydream, to speculate, to ponder. The ability to imagine separates us from other animals. It allows us to strategize, to plan, to reason, to learn, to create a better world than existed before.
  3. Books are cheaper hour-for-hour of entertainment than movies or DVD's. Especially in tight economic times, it makes sense to foster the enjoyment of written fiction. For the same amount a 2-hour movie or DVD costs, you can get a book that will entertain you for days, or weeks. Or you can borrow it from your local library for free.
  4. Reading relieves stress, and does not overstimulate like TV can. Most modern television programming is designed to capture your attention by constantly pinging your brain with abrupt sounds and transitions. This gears your brain up and creates stress. Research at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68 percent. Or as cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis put it, "Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation."
  5. Fiction allows us to enter into the narrative, imagine ourselves there, in ways that non-fiction can't. Even a biography is already finished before you begin reading it, because it's about a real person. Even if you don't know the specific history of a particular biographical figure, biographies are seldom written about losers, whereas the loser is the staple of the fictional story. Or as one English teacher from Wichita, Kansas put it, "Fiction's unknowability causes it to be a whole lot like Life as we experience it."
  6. The mind absorbs new information most easily through stories. Humans are by nature story creatures, learning through experience and metaphor. Teaching through storytelling is a tradition as old as human thought itself. This is one reason why, even though fiction is about people who never existed and events that never happened, all fictional people and events are based on reality. As psychologists Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell explain in their book Dreaming Reality, "The reason that stories are so satisfying and illuminating is that they tap into the same process that nature uses for the transmission of knowledge."
  7. Reading, and reading fiction in particular, can make you a better speaker and writer. In modern times, communication skills are more important than ever. And because storytelling is such a key skill in transmitting knowledge, you will become a better communicator if you learn how to tell stories. And the best way to learn how to tell stories is to see them being told. In general, exposing yourself to the language, as happens when you read, will instinctively improve your own language and communication skills.

7 Reasons Why You Should Read Fiction

Still can't imagine yourself reading through a whole novel? Try the short story. Yes, the short story has been dying for some time, but that's because readers have been uninterested. Even so, classic and newly released short story collections continue to be published, and for the busy, 21'st-century citizen, the short story offers the benefits of fiction in bite-sized portions that he can more readily enjoy.

Fiction should be a staple of every person's lifestyle, because anyone who doesn't read it at least occasionally is missing out on the benefits it offers.

How to Calculate a Cost of Living Allowance

A Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) is a salary supplement paid to employees to cover differences in the cost of living, particularly as a result of an international assignment. The amount of COLA should enable an expatriate to be able to purchase the same basket of goods and services in the host location as they could in their home country. The basis for calculating a COLA is the Cost of Living Index (COLI) which indexes the costs of the same basket of goods and services in different geographic locations. COLA is a simple accurate method of measuring fluctuating salary purchasing power and ensuring parity.

Cost of Living Index

Dvds Tv Series

Our cost of Living Indexes measure the cost of 230 products and services across 13 different basket groups in 276 cities across the globe. The data is gathered by a team of research analysts who survey comparable items that are available internationally. A minimum of 3 prices for the same brand/size/volume of product is used to determine the average price for each item in each location. The items are priced on a quarterly basis and tend to rise and fall with inflation. The 13 different basket categories are as follows:

Each basket category does not count equally and are weighted in the final calculation based on expatriate spending patterns.

In order to calculate an accurate cost of living index for a specific individual the basket items that are not relevant to the individual should be excluded from the calculation. For example if education and housing is provided by the employer these basket categories would be excluded from the cost of living index calculation. This increases the accuracy of the cost of living index and makes it possible for each individual to have their own customized cost of living index based on their specific arrangements rather than using an overall "generic" index which is likely to contains costs that are not relevant to the individual.

The formula for calculating the specific cost of living index for an international assignment is as follows:

Cost of Living Index = Customized Cost of Living Index for Host City / Customized Cost of Living Index for Home City

When moving to a higher cost of living host city, the index will be greater than 1 (positive). When moving to a lower cost of living host city the index will be less than 1 (negative). Where the index is negative it means that in real terms the cost of living in the host city is lower than the home city. This means that if the negative index where to be applied to the employee's salary, they would actually be paid proportionately less spendable salary in the host city. It is important to note that the majority of organizations do not apply a negative cost of living index because it makes it difficult to persuade an employee to take up an assignment as they tend to see it as a reduction in salary.

Examples of Cost of Living Index Calculations using our data:

Example 1) An Australian employee moving from Perth to London where healthcare and communication will be provided by the employer

More Expensive in London:

  • Alcohol & Tobacco +4.77%
  • Clothing +21.85%
  • Education +31.53%
  • Furniture & Appliances +16.03%
  • Groceries +16.35%
  • Household +50.72%
  • Miscellaneous +137.47%
  • Personal Care +11.18%
  • Recreation & Culture -6.82%
  • Restaurants Meals Out and Hotels +34.99%
  • Transport +19.80%

The overall difference in cost of living moving from Perth and London is +28.06%.

In this case the cost of living index is positive and would be applied as it is.

Example 2) A British employee moving from London to Mumbai where the employer will provide housing and education

More Expensive in Mumbai:

  • Alcohol & Tobacco -37.53%
  • Clothing -9.58%
  • Communication -44.92%
  • Furniture & Appliances -19.31%
  • Groceries -24.03%
  • Healthcare -31.24%
  • Miscellaneous -72.43%
  • Personal Care -24.94%
  • Recreation & Culture -35.73%
  • Restaurants Meals Out and Hotels -33.11%
  • Transport is -27.99%

The overall difference in cost of living moving from London Mumbai is -30.53%.

In this case the cost of living index is negative and would not be applied.

Net Spendable Salary

Differences in cost of living only impact the portion of the salary that is spendable in the host country. Items in the home country such as retirement funding, medical insurance and other home based costs are not impacted by the cost of living in the host country.

To determine the Net Spendable Salary establish what amount / portion of the current salary (in home currency) is spent in maintaining the employee's current standard of living / lifestyle. What will the expatriate need to spend their salary on in the host country? For example will accommodation be provided or will the employee pay rent, will healthcare be provided etc. Deduct all items that are either provided in kind or are spendable in the home country. Deduct the hypothetical amount of tax, social contributions and any other statutory deductions applicable in the home country from the Spendable Salary. What is left is the Net Spendable Salary.

Cost of Living Allowance (COLA)

The formula for calculating the cost of living allowance using the above inputs is as follows:

(Net Spendable Salary X Cost of Living Index X Hardship Index X Exchange Rate) less (Net Spendable Salary X Exchange Rate) = COLA

Examples of COLA Calculations using our data

Example 1) An Australian employee with a net spendable salary of AUD0,000 moving from Perth to London where healthcare and communication will be provided by the employer

(0,000.00 X 1.2806 X 1 X 0.4768) less (0,000.00 X 0.4768) = COLA of £13,379.44 (GBP)

Based on all the above factors a person would require a Cost of Living Allowance of £13,379.44 (GBP), in addition to their current salary of 100,000.00 Australian Dollar (AUD) to compensate for relocating from Perth to London. This Cost of Living Allowance compensates for the overall cost of living difference of +28.06% and the relative difference in hardship of 0%.

Example 2) A British employee with a net spendable salary of £18,000 moving from London to Mumbai where the employer will provide housing and education

Note: Because the Cost of Living Index is negative it is not applied.

(£18,000.00 X 1 X 1.3 X 67.2852) less (£18,000.00 X67.2852) = COLA of 363,340.32 Indian Rupee

Based on all the above factors a person would require a Cost of Living Allowance of 363,340.32 (INR ), in addition to their current salary of £18,000.00 British Pound (GBP ) to compensate for relocating from London to Mumbai. This Cost of Living Allowance compensates for the overall cost of living difference of [-30.53%] and the relative difference in hardship of 30%.

COLA Payment

The COLA is paid as a salary supplement (i.e. as an additional allowance) net of tax in the host country. If the COLA is a taxable allowance in the host country it should be grossed up in order that the full amount of calculated COLA is paid net of tax given that the basis of the calculation is Net Spendable Salary. The COLA is often accompanied by other allowances and benefits such as flights home, relocation / settling in allowance, and furnishing allowance.

Exchange Rate Fluctuations

Significant changes in the exchange rate can make a considerable difference in the COLA calculation. In 2008 some of the major global exchange rates changed by as much as 30-40%.

The cost of living index reflects the changes caused by inflation and exchange rates. In the short-term there may be disequilibrium between inflation and the exchange rate (the one pushes the other), however over time the cost of living index provides the most accurate view of the cost of living.

It is important to remind expatriates that when the cost of living difference is negative, and the negative value has not been applied, they have higher purchasing power in the host country than they would at home.

Where a negative cost of living index has not been applied (our recommended approach), and a change in the exchange rate indicates an upward adjustment in COLA may be required, it is recommended that the COLA should not be adjusted upward until the cost of living index becomes positive i.e. the cost of living reflects that there is a "real" increase in cost of living between home and host countries. This may mean that their would be no increase in the COLA as a result of exchange rate fluctuations for some considerable time. During this time the employee's purchasing power decreases. But it is important to remember that until the cost of living difference becomes positive, the individual will still have a higher purchasing power than they do in their home country.

It is advisable to stipulate a currency protection rule, rather than reacting to every fluctuation in the exchange rate. For example the rule may state that COLA will be reviewed if exchange rates or local inflation move by more than +10% during a year. It is important to keep in mind that the prices of goods and services are unlikely to drop in local currency. This would only occur in a period of deflation (negative inflation). Therefore the currency protection rule would normally make provision for upward adjustments in COLA and not downward adjustments during an employee's assignment. Downward adjustments to an existing COLA due to exchange rate fluctuations without a corresponding drop in the prices of local goods and services puts immense pressure on an employee's host currency budget commitments and can lead to the employee experiencing financial difficulty.

Using an independent service provider provides an independent, objective basis for determining an employee's COLA.

We recommend therefore that a COLA is calculated by applying the specific (customized) cost of living index to the net spendable salary at the beginning of the assignment and monitoring exchange rate fluctuations thereafter in addition to the annual salary review.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 Review

Buffy is a typical teenage girl who just happens to also be a vampire slayer - the vampire slayer, actually. As the voiceover at the start of each episode recites, each generation there is one chosen girl who must fight against the forces of darkness. Buffy's the current slayer, but she's a bit different from those who came before her. Season 1 consists of the first twelve episodes of the season. This first season focuses on Buffy's struggle with teenage life and her heroic destiny.

Fans of fantasy dramas will surely enjoy this show, and there's no better place to start than the first season which introduces the show's cast of characters and mythologies carried throughout the show's seven seasons.

Dvds Tv Series

My favorite episodes include the funny "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date," the romantic "Angel" and the telling, "Prophecy Girl."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1 Review

The only thing I didn't' like about this set was the length of the first season. Coming into the TV schedule halfway through the season as a replacement, Season 1 is only half of the normal length of TV show seasons.

As I finish watching Season 1, I inevitably move on to Season 2. Season 1 deals with Buffy coming to terms with her calling (the season finale, "Prophecy Girl" emphasizes this theme) and Season 2 gets even more into what her job entails as well as the decisions and sacrifices she must make.

The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is excellent, all through its seven seasons. In this first season DVD set, the characters are pretty basic, but the actors do a wonderful job portraying their characters. Eventually the characters gain much depth and more interesting personalities.

Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the title role superbly, combining typical teenage girl with a burdened hero. David Boreanaz plays her love interest, Angel, the vampire with a soul. He played his role so well, he got his own TV series three years later. Allyson Hannigan plays Willow, the brain and Nicholas Brendan plays Xander, her geeky best friend. Rounding out the cast is Anthony Stewart Head, who plays Giles, the school's librarian and more importantly, Buffy's Watcher - her trainer.

For me, watching the Buffy Season 1 DVD set is a great introduction to the entire series. The show is full of great mythology, scary monsters, and quality drama. The show also has a sense of humor to it that can be appreciated by its audience. It has everything!

Neha Sareen and Ira Subey review Transporter 3, You Dont Mess with the Zohan (DVD), Sex and the City (DVD), Wanted (DVD). Transporter 3 Neha says TRASH IT. It's easily the most predictable and forgetable film of the franachise. The movie doesnt even come close to challenging the Jason Bourne series or the Bond franchise.Ira too says TRASH IT because it's a done to death action flick with absolutely nothing orginal to offer and also trash it because the leading lady - Natalia Rudakova - is aweful! You Dont Mess with the Zohan Neha says TRASH IT - Its' a silly non-sensical comedy that loses the plot. The writers including Adam Sandler, border on the verge of being completely tasteless in an attempt to create humor. Ira too says TRASH IT beacuse before you know it, the film collapses into cras farce. Sex and the City Neha says TRASH IT beacuse it's high on style and low on substance. If I wanted to watch fashion, I would go to a fashion show. Ira too says TRASH IT as it has nothing new to offer and you are better of watching re runs of the series on TV. Wanted Neha says CATCH IT. It's a clever and original action hero script directed and treated in a unique and interesting manner. Ira too says CATCH IT for James Mcavoy's performance and director Bekmambetov's refereshing treatment.
