The Best Play In Youth Football

The answer may surprise you. Many youth football teams attempt to emulate what the coach has seen on TV the past week or what the head coach ran as a high school player 20 years ago. Unfortunately what works at the College or Pro level on TV often doesn't work very well at the youth level. The coach's high school system may have worked well for his team 20-30 years ago with 6 days a week practices and fleet running backs, but fails miserably at the youth level.

At the youth level our job as coaches is to teach the kids how to block and tackle safely and effectively. We teach them how to get into good athletic stances as well as the base rules and strategies. Our most important job should be to make football fun for the player and coach our teams up to their full potential.

Dvds Tv Series

However, you can have fun and win at the same time. In fact most players that play on perennial losing teams lose their love of the game and quit. That is one reason I developed these coaching materials for my own 400 kid organization, so that our coaches would be competent enough to coach the kids to their God given potential. To allow our teams to play competitively so the kids would stay engaged in our program. In fact my materials are filled with how to make practices both well organized and fun.

The Best Play In Youth Football

Most of the plays or schemes the typical youth coach has in his playbook are not designed to the talent level of most youth teams. I see teams with no speed often trying to run sweeps, I see teams with kids that can't throw or catch throwing (trying to throw) 20 yard passes. I see teams running bootlegs with very slow quarterbacks. I see teams running a dive play with no lead blocker into the heart of youth defenses. I see teams trying reverses against well disciplined teams for huge losses. I see pass patterns with 3-4 and even 5 receivers. I see teams trying to get a 9 year old to read two different defenders on option plays etc etc etc.

I rarely see: good lead off-tackle plays, one or two receiver pass patterns, optional run and pass plays, trap plays, pulling, double teams, wedge blocking, designed plays to draw the defense off-sides, unbalanced formations, motion, and great sportsmanship.
In youth football each year is different; you will not always have a big team or have a very fast "feature back" that can outrun everyone on a sweep play. Unlike the colleges or pros, you don't have 100s of kids from all across the country to choose from or 20-40 hours a week practice time. In my mind the team that wins because they just happen to have the fastest kid in the league and he outruns everyone on sweeps and kick returns is a joke, a luck of the draw thing. Football is a team game and a well coached team won't give up sweeps for touchdowns or ever kick deep ti that speedster. My first team defense has not given up a sweep for a score in over 5 years.

I've coached youth football for about 15 years and one play that we have always been able to run effectively regardless of the size or talent of the team I've had is the lead
off-tackle power. It can be run by out of nearly any formation, I love it out of the Single Wing with 4 lead blockers and a double team block at the point of attack. While it isn't a terribly sexy play, it gets you 4-5 yards every down in most cases and sets up "home run" complementary plays like the trap, play action pass or wing reverse. Most youth teams are set up to stop the sweep, the "holy grail" play for most youth teams. Other defenses try to shut down the "dive" in the gaps next to the center. Very few youth football defenses are set up to stop even an average off-tackle play.

If the other team gives you the off-tackle, take it until they over-commit, then run the home run play. In our Championship game in 2003 the other team was so concerned about taking away our inside "wedge" play, they left open the off-tackle. We started the game with 7 straight tailback off-tackle plays to our strong side and scored. The very next series they moved out to our off-tackle hole and we ran wedge for a 65 yard score on first down. Then they tried to stop the wedge play and moved everyone up and we ran the wedge play action pass for a 60 yard score. We were up 46-0 in the third quarter when they finally just gave up and tried to run the clock. Both the wedge and off tackle plays can be run well by very average skilled kids.

In another game the defensive team was set up to stop the sweep and wedge plays but again were giving us the off-tackle play. We run no-huddle so we get many more snaps in than most youth teams. In that game we had 71 snaps, of which 51 were off-tackle strong plays. We were getting our 4-5 yards every time, nothing real big, but we did get some very big gains and touchdowns from blocking back traps, wing reverses (2 TDs) and TB run pass option (pass for TD). So we scored 5 touchdowns and out of the 5 TD's, 4 were in excess of 20 yards. We were only stopped on downs once and we fumbled once too. We were 2-2 passing for 56 yards and a TD. Now how much fun was that for our 3 tailbacks that shared duty at the tailback position that day and for our pulling guards? They all had a blast, so did our place kickers, and the 4 other kids that had TDs playing non-tailback positions. Oh yeah, our defense had fun too, they could play with abandon since we were moving the ball at will on offense.

The net is, the off-tackle play at the youth level is the hardest play to stop, yet few teams try and perfect it. It takes little talent to run the play, no studs required. In my Single Wing Offense, we practice that play more than any other. We block it a variety of ways so we know it will work and we will run it, regardless of what kind of defense we face. Our kids can run the off-tackle in their sleep, we often start our practices with the "Power Hour" as Steve Calande calls it. We run our off-tackle strong power for 30-40 minutes on air, fit and freeze and then with players holding hand shields going 100%. Ye,s just one play often makes up half of our offensive practice time.

If your team is doing poorly, you don't need a trick play or new offense (what most coaches panic and do) you need to get perfect at running the off-tackle lead power play.
We know we are playing a good team when they come out and try and establish the
off-tackle play. Of all the videos I've seen from youth teams from all over the country, regardless of the offensive set or personnel, the best teams always have a good off-tackle play. It isn't sexy but it does the trick and it sets up everything else in your offense.

Don't worry about putting in a bunch of fancy "trick" plays before you get your off-tackle play down perfectly.

Overview: Doing Business On eBay - Part 4 (Final)

Let's recap. In this series of articles, in Part 1, we discussed the three primary concerns: Gmail Account, eBay Account, and PayPal account. In Part 2, we discussed: What is the Feedback System, What are One-Cent Digital items, and Bidding On Products. In Part 3, we discussed: Another Way To Shop On eBay, How Do You Pay For Your Purchase, and Leaving Feedback For A Transaction. This brings us to Part 4 (Final).

In this article, we will discuss the process for selling items on eBay. Buying and selling on eBay, are both considered shopping online. When you first start selling, you should use those items that you currently have in your home: items that you purchased in a local store, or perhaps gifts that were given you, but, for which you have no use.

What Do I Have to Sell?

Overview: Doing Business On eBay - Part 4 (Final)

When we think about selling on eBay, usually, our first thought is: I don't have anything at home to sell. This is a natural response, especially if you don't know what types of items are being sold. Remember, as I stated in Part 1, eBay is the largest and most popular flea market in the world. If you list it, it will be bought. It is almost impossible for you NOT to have something to sell. Your items can be new or used (in good condition).

For example, you can sell household items (books, CDs, and DVDs). You can sell toys, and even clothing, new or used (in good condition). You can sell personal collections (baseball cards, comic books, coin, or stamp collections). You can sell electronic devices (old computers and/or computer parts). Take inventory of your household or garage items, and instead of selling them at a garage sale, or the local flea market, sell them on eBay: the world's largest flea market.

Note: When you consider selling your items on eBay, don't think about the original cost of the item, but think about how these items are just lying around your house - and not generating any income. If all else fails, you can purchase items at a garage sale, and convert these items into cash.

What is the difference between Auction and Fixed- Price Sales?

Once you decide what to sell, then you need to decide your type of selling method: auction or fixed-price. An auction is a 1-10 day listing that allows your buyer to bid on your item. This process can be exciting and competitive; your buyer realizes that time is running out, and he has to make a decision before the deadline. You (the seller) can see the activity and competitive bids that are generated from your product listing. The fixed-price listing is a 3-30 day listing - a Buy it Now Product - with a specified price. This means that your buyer can purchase your item immediately, without having to go through the hassle of waiting until all bids are posted. The best duration for a fixed-priced auction is usually 7 days.

A fixed-price sale is different from an online auction because there is no bidding and waiting to see if you won. On the other hand, fixed-price is similar to an auction, when negotiation is involved. Fixed-price also uses what is known as a Best Offer Option. Using this option, your buyer is allowed to send you (the seller), an offer of what price he is willing to pay for your item. For example: if you listed the item for 0, and allowed Best Offers; if your buyer did not want to pay 0, he could send you an offer to purchase your item for . You can either accept, decline, or even counter-offer your item for . The Best Offer option allows you and your buyer to negotiate the price until the two of you reach an acceptable selling price. The best duration for a fixed-price listing is usually 30 days. And remember, when selling on eBay, always include your shipping cost - or list it as free-shipping.

I hope that these four articles - on the overview of doing business on eBay - have helped you, in some way, to achieve a better understanding. Thank you for your interest.

Blu-ray and Netflix Streaming Video - So Easy a Caveman Could Do it (Wait, Is That Copyrighted?)

I've come late to the Blu-ray party. Like most HD junkies I was waiting for the fight between HDDVD and Blu-ray to be won, which it was in convincing fashion in 2008. Now that I've arrived at the party with martini in hand, I'm happy to be here. What I've ended up with is an LG BD300 Blu-ray player with built in Netflix streaming capabilities. If you've dismissed Blu-ray or streaming video you owe it to yourself to investigate this. What's sitting in my entertainment center now is proof positive that we've reached an age where even stupid people can be dangerous with technology.

First, Netflix has always seemed like an alien concept to me. I hate using snail mail. Now don't get me wrong, I think that the US Postal service is the best bargain to be had on the planet. Paying someone a few dozen pennies to hand carry a piece of paper across the country is an incredible deal. However, it's the main reason that I never signed up for a Netflix account. It seems like a tremendous hassle.

Dvds Tv Series

However, the built in Netflix streaming capabilities in the Blu-ray player had me intrigued. Since my XBOX is not on my main television, I didn't go that route after it was implemented last month on XBOX live. The surprise was how easy of a set up this entire outfit turned out to be. It's proof positive that even the world's most tech-ignorant goon could be dangerous with technology.

Blu-ray and Netflix Streaming Video - So Easy a Caveman Could Do it (Wait, Is That Copyrighted?)

First, the greatest invention in the history of humankind to this point is HDMI. Had I been the guiding hand in the evolution of man, I would have skipped the wheel and gone straight for HDMI. For every woeful man that has spent a substantial portion of his life moving entertainment centers and spending hours untangling wires, rerouting speakers, and basically contemplating suicide because of it, HDMI is wonderful. One cable. Video. Sound. Perfect. I'm not sure that there's any real quality improvement in the picture over the old DVI format, but the hassle factor is beyond measure.

Lets walk through the steps of setting this monstrosity up.

I removed my progressive scan upconverting standard DVD player, leaving the HDMI cable in place. Replacing it with the Blu-ray was simple. The total time it took was a couple of minutes running the power cable and the LAN cable (to use the streaming Netflix features).

Providing network connectivity was the next step. No LAN interface in my living room and no wireless support on the Blu-ray player meant that I had to get a Netgear Powerline network extender into an outlet near my TV. The Netgear device was simple to install. There's no software required for this, just simply plug the transmitter into a power outlet near the router, hardwiring it with a LAN cable to an open router port, then the receiver into a power outlet near the TV and run a LAN cable into the back of the Blu-ray player. The wireless extender required absolutely no soft set up. They automatically connected to my network and were up and ready to go. In fact, I use the term "transmitter" loosely. Both boxes are identical, whichever one you plug into the router becomes the "transmitter". The initial investment was in the Netgear XE104 that functions using the power circuits in your home.

Once I booted the Blu Ray player it had some trouble finding the network when I went to the Netflix option in the root menu. This was resolved easily enough by going into the network set up and re-affirming it as a "dynamic IP." I'm assuming this just forced the DVD player to renew it's IP address. As soon as I had network connectivity, it instantly informed me that there was an update to the Netflix software and it took less than a minute to download.
I took the plunge and went online and signed up for the Netflix 2-week trial on the .99 plan, the lowest unlimited plan they offer. Even though the first two weeks are free on the trial, it did require credit/debit card info. It also requires you put the Netflix device ID of the Blu-ray player in when you sign up online. Very simple, as soon as the Netflix update downloaded it gave me the ID on screen. Within seconds of entering the ID into the Netflix website the player informed me that it was authorized.

The .99 plan entitles you to put up to 9 films in your Netflix queue, 6 of which can be streaming picks. Only selected titles are available for streaming to your device, and almost none are new releases, however this plan allows you to do mail and/or streaming in any combination. There are still thousands of streaming titles. Once you complete the sign up, you can add any "instant titles" into your queue and they show up immediately in your DVD player Netflix menu. From the player's menu you can also remove the films from your Netflix queue instantly or hope between multiple features on the same title. It's really incredibly cool.

Overall, from not having the seals on the boxes broken to set up and ready to go was about 15 minutes. Another noteworthy plus on the LG BD300 is that it that my Toshiba LCD picks up the fact that the Blu-ray player has been turned on and automatically changes the input setting on my television over to it. I found this particularly interesting because the this was not the case with my LG upconverting standard def DVD player, hooked up to the same input and using the same HDMI cable.

The difference between the upconverting 1080P standard DVD and the Blu-ray is considerable. The Hi-Def picture is better than you get through your cable or satellite provider (most networks aren't broadcasting 1080p yet anyway). The first disc we watched in Blu-ray on our 52inch Toshiba LCD was The Dark Knight, and it was stunning. The IMAX sequences, mainly the long cityscapes, were mind-bogglingly sharp. It's really a perfect first choice film to start with.

Pixar's Wall-E was another mindblowingly sharp presentation. It's odd nowadays that when you sit down and watch a film like Wall-E, you're watching a product that in spite of being called a "film" actually had absolutely no film involved. Straight digital transfer to a 1080P picture that is sharper than the 3rd blade of a brand new cartridge in my Gillette Fusion Razor.

With the lessons of XBox Live/Netflix issues expressed in the article referenced above, I did start to become somewhat concerned about the picture quality of the Netfix streaming. And sure enough, the first film into my queue, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wasn't giving us HD quality.

Here it came as described, the "cheesecloth" quality video, suddenly I was watching YOUTUBE on my big screen TV. It was quite disappointing. Then about 30 minutes into the start of the film, we lost connection completely. I was getting steamed about my stream. I went back the DVD player HOME menu and re-entered my Netflix queue and tried to resume Spotless Mind where we left off. Then, suddenly poof, the signal meter zipped all the way up informing me that I was getting full HD quality. We watched the rest of the film and the picture quality seemed ok.

Subsequently though, every title we picked looked like hell. After doing some research I found the several tech sites like Endgadget pretty much said the Netgear XE104 generally could not handle the bandwidth of an HD signal and in average operating conditions tested by the reviewers usually didn't even manage the bandwidth for standard def quality.

Further investigation led me to the XDH111, Netgear's latest and greatest powerline Ethernet adapter tested to and advertised to handle the bandwidth of an HD signal. The practical advantage of this was that not only did I get to upgrade to a better product, but it was .00 cheaper at Fry's Electronics than the substandard XE104 was at Best Buy, where it was originally purchased. Fry's in store had it for 9.99. The cheapest I could find online was 3.99. Good old Fry's Electronics.

The XDH111 improved the situation immediately. The signal meter shot to it's highest for the first HD title we streamed and to the top level of the standard def level on the non-HD titles. The Hi-Def titles look amazing over the Netflix streaming, but the standard def titles still seem just a tad soft even though the signal meter on the player is showing the best signal. I'm going to experiment by moving the location of the Netgear station to a different location in my house on the same electrical circuit as the player - fortunately, I have some options here because I have hardwired Ethernet jacks at several locations in my home.

Stupidly, when I built the house 5 years ago, I never considered needing an Ethernet jack behind my TV. I mean, after all, game consoles would never offer online play and there's no reason to have a PC in my living room...Ugh, what an idiot I was.

As for Netflix, even though new releases are mostly not available for streaming, there is one huge piece of the Netflix instant queue that I immediately zeroed in on: TV Box Sets galore. I could get classic and new Doctor Who, 30 Rock, The Office (both the UK and US versions), Charles in Charge, Heroes, The Tick (the live action series)....you name it, and there it was instantly watchable on my TV. In my eyes, this calls for installing a bedpan and refrigerator in my living room couch. For .99 per month this is potentially the bargain of the century (next to the US Postal service). In fact, I just enjoyed watching the pilot episode of The Tick, which I hadn't seen since, well...since the damned thing first aired. I also noticed the they had Heroes Season 3 available for streaming even though it's not available on DVD yet and the season's not over. The most recent episode is just about a week or two behind.

I guess I'm still of the opinion that Netflix by mail is going to be a tremendous pain in the ass, but we'll definitely be giving that a shot with newer releases.
I have to say that now's the time. Blu-ray is a phenomenal thumbs up. Oddly enough though, I would have to say that this whole streaming Netflix feature may be more valuable than the disc player itself. It's nice to have both. If you have FIOS or a Wideband Cable connection (Docsis 3.0) you should be set. I have neither right now, but I'm still able to get HD quality across, but I imagine we're on the cusp of the bandwidth no longer being an issue for HD streaming. Time to sell your children off for scientific experimentation and finance yourself a Blu-ray Home entertainment system.

On a side note, there were some moments where the investment in a PS3 was considered rather than a standalone Blu-ray, but in all honesty, I'm not sure I would want to give up the Netflix option, especially with the small number of PS3 exclusive titles that intrigue right now. Also, it's another check mark on the list of horrific mistakes that Sony continues to make with the marketing of the PS3. Netflix wanted deals with Sony and Microsoft. They didn't give a flying flip how they got their content into the home. Sony's John Koller basically told them to take a flying leap. "Our customers want to own the content," he commented. What the hell?

Well, with the .00 I saved upgrading two products levels higher on the Network Adapter I was able to pick up Evil Dead 2 on Blu-ray on sale for .99. Thank you Fry's Electronics! I'm dining with Bruce Campbell tonight.

Draining an RV Water System

When you return from a trip and you're not going to use the RV for a while you need to drain the entire water system to prevent it from getting stale and musty. You can start by draining the water heater. Go to the outside compartment where the water heater is located. The drain plug, or petcock is located in the bottom left hand corner. Remove the plug and open the pressure relief valve on top of the water heater to assist in draining.

Caution: Never drain the water heater when it's hot or under pressure.

Dvds Tv Series

Next you need to locate the low point water line drains. It may take a while to find them, but I assure you they are there. There will be one for the hot and one for the cold water lines. This is the lowest point in the water system. Open these and let the water drain out. There's one more thing left to do, find the drain for the fresh water holding tank and drain all of the water from it.

Draining an RV Water System

At this point you can turn the water pump on for a moment to force any remaining water out. Do not let the pump continue to run once the water stops draining. Close all the drains. Now, do not make the mistake that this is how you winterize the RV water system. If you do, it can be a very costly mistake next spring. All we have accomplished so far was to evacuate the majority of water from the system. If by accident you forget to drain the water system and you get that notorious stale odor all is not lost. You just need to sanitize the water system.

Start by draining all of the old water out, and then close all of the drains. Take a quarter cup of house hold bleach for every fifteen gallons of water that your fresh water tank holds. Mix the bleach, with water, into a one-gallon container and pour it into the fresh water holding tank. Fill the fresh water tank completely full of water. Turn the water pump on, open all of the hot and cold faucets and run the water until you smell the bleach at each faucet. Close the faucets and let it sit for about twelve hours. Drain the entire system and re-fill the fresh water tank with potable water. Open all of the faucets and run the water until you no longer smell any bleach. It may be necessary to repeat this process again to eliminate all signs of bleach from the water system.

Once this is done it is safe to use your water system. It's also a good idea to use a water filter at campgrounds and to keep bottled water on hand for drinking.

Happy Camping,

Mark

Testing a Transformer - How To Accurately Test A Transformer

There is two types of transformers in the market- linear transformer and switch mode power transformer. The transformers design is different. Sometimes it is just referred as ac transformer. Linear transformer mostly used in radio, project kits, VCD and etc while switch mode transformer can be found in Monitor, Tv, Fax and so on.

A transformer consists of two or more coils wound on the same core. For power transformers, the core material is usually iron. For a radio-frequency transformer, the core material is usually ferrite or air. The basic property of a transformer is to change AC voltage. A transformer cannot change direct current voltage. A step down transformer has a lower AC output voltage at its secondary winding than the AC input voltage to its primary winding. Conversely, a step up transformer has a higher secondary than primary voltage. The transformer laminations or coating of shellac, enamel or varnish is to insulate adjacent turns from shorts between winding. I will not go too details about how transformer work and transformer calculation as you can read more details from most electrical and electronic transformers books.

Dvds Tv Series

How to test transformers: Transformer failures are relatively rare in most electronic equipment, compared with other components. If too much current goes through a coil or winding, the winding heats up and can either open up completely, or the insulation between turns of wire can break down, causing the coil to be partly or completely shorted.

Testing a Transformer - How To Accurately Test A Transformer

Just like a coil, you can check continuity of any primary or secondary transformer winding. The actual value of DC resistance you read is rather meaningless, but at least you will know whether a winding is open. Checking linear transformer is quite straight forward. Apply the ac voltage to the primary winding and expect output voltage at the secondary side. No or low output voltage means the transformer winding has open or shorted winding. Look for any evidence of overheating, such as darkened or blackened areas or a burnt smell.

About how to test a power transformer-it is a little bit complicated. You cannot apply ac voltage to the equipment and expect the desire output at the secondary side without connect to load otherwise over voltage will happen (because you have removed all the secondary load) and will blow the power section which consist of power fet, pwm ic and etc. Switch mode power supply are designed to run with load while linear transformer can be test without load.

The best way to test a switch mode power transformer is first remove it from the board. Check only the primary winding as secondary winding failures are exceedingly rare. How do we know which one is the primary winding? Trace from the big filter cap the positive pin to see where the circuit goes. It will go to one of the pin of the transformer. Then look for the power fet middle pin which is the Drain and it will lead to another pin of the transformer. This two pins is the primary winding of the transformer. Checking the resistance of the primary winding only can reveal whether it is open but it cannot check if it has developed a shorted winding. Only by using a ringer test you will know if it shorted or not. A shorted turn in the primary winding can cause the power section to blow.

The cheapest ringer tester that i came across is Dick Smith LOPT METER or flyback tester. Just connect the probes to the primary winding and the result are instantly seen from the Led bar graph. 4-8 bar represent a good winding, 1-2 bar represent partial short and if the led goes off means there is a heavy short in the winding. Besides checking the transformer it can be use to check B+ COIL, horizontal yoke coil and flyback primary winding and ballast (choke).

The expensive ringer tester is from sencore equipment. Sencore LC102 and LC103C besides checking capacitor it also have the capability to check all kind of winding. Whether it is a low voltage transformer, high voltage transformer, current transformer, pulse transformer, electric transformer, custom transformer this equipment will be able to check and test it.

If you do not wish to invest on this tester you may use a light bulb to check it. Remove one of the primary winding pin and connect a 60 watt light bulb. One end to the circuit while the other to the transformer pin. If the bulb light and didn't goes off suspect a shorted winding and if the light goes off, the winding is ok.

Transformer repair is not easy and it require a good skill to do it. Most of the transformer repairer preferred to rewind bigger winding such as fan, car alternator and starter. Switch mode power transformer is a little bit difficult to rewind because of the small size and low price.

7 Reasons Why You Should Read Fiction

I'm a bit of an oddball among writers, because I don't condemn the television set. On the contrary, I think everyone, and especially serious writers, should watch plenty of TV, including TV comedies and dramas, because the audio/visual format provides a perspective that you can't get from reading a novel. This flies in the face of the common rant, that TV is a scourge that should be eliminated from the entertainment landscape.

On the other hand, the recent trend has been to watch more TV and more movies and read less, and when one reads, to read non-fiction instead of fiction. The reasons given range from "Reading is hard" to "Novels are uninformative." But what most people don't realize is that the written word, and fiction in particular, provides benefits you can't get from other media. For example:

Dvds Tv Series

  1. Reading fiction can help you improve your people skills. A 2008 study by Raymond Mar found that people who read more fiction score higher on tests of empathy and social acumen, and that people who read more non-fiction score lower. This is perhaps because through fiction, you experience the characters' social interactions and relationships in a way impossible with most non-fiction.
  2. Reading fiction stimulates the imagination. While reading fiction, your mind reconstructs each scene in much more detail than the author described it. It does so by visualizing the non-existent people and places of the story, often basing these visualizations on actual people and places you've seen. This is the human ability to imagine, to daydream, to speculate, to ponder. The ability to imagine separates us from other animals. It allows us to strategize, to plan, to reason, to learn, to create a better world than existed before.
  3. Books are cheaper hour-for-hour of entertainment than movies or DVD's. Especially in tight economic times, it makes sense to foster the enjoyment of written fiction. For the same amount a 2-hour movie or DVD costs, you can get a book that will entertain you for days, or weeks. Or you can borrow it from your local library for free.
  4. Reading relieves stress, and does not overstimulate like TV can. Most modern television programming is designed to capture your attention by constantly pinging your brain with abrupt sounds and transitions. This gears your brain up and creates stress. Research at the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress levels by up to 68 percent. Or as cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis put it, "Losing yourself in a book is the ultimate relaxation."
  5. Fiction allows us to enter into the narrative, imagine ourselves there, in ways that non-fiction can't. Even a biography is already finished before you begin reading it, because it's about a real person. Even if you don't know the specific history of a particular biographical figure, biographies are seldom written about losers, whereas the loser is the staple of the fictional story. Or as one English teacher from Wichita, Kansas put it, "Fiction's unknowability causes it to be a whole lot like Life as we experience it."
  6. The mind absorbs new information most easily through stories. Humans are by nature story creatures, learning through experience and metaphor. Teaching through storytelling is a tradition as old as human thought itself. This is one reason why, even though fiction is about people who never existed and events that never happened, all fictional people and events are based on reality. As psychologists Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell explain in their book Dreaming Reality, "The reason that stories are so satisfying and illuminating is that they tap into the same process that nature uses for the transmission of knowledge."
  7. Reading, and reading fiction in particular, can make you a better speaker and writer. In modern times, communication skills are more important than ever. And because storytelling is such a key skill in transmitting knowledge, you will become a better communicator if you learn how to tell stories. And the best way to learn how to tell stories is to see them being told. In general, exposing yourself to the language, as happens when you read, will instinctively improve your own language and communication skills.

7 Reasons Why You Should Read Fiction

Still can't imagine yourself reading through a whole novel? Try the short story. Yes, the short story has been dying for some time, but that's because readers have been uninterested. Even so, classic and newly released short story collections continue to be published, and for the busy, 21'st-century citizen, the short story offers the benefits of fiction in bite-sized portions that he can more readily enjoy.

Fiction should be a staple of every person's lifestyle, because anyone who doesn't read it at least occasionally is missing out on the benefits it offers.

What Offenses Should You Run in Youth Football

If I couldn't run the Single Wing offense for my youth football team, this is what I would run:

In order of my first to last choices

Dvds Tv Series

Dead T/Bay City T,

What Offenses Should You Run in Youth Football

Markham Double Wing,

Wing T,

"I" Formation,

Flexbone,

Wishbone,

Veer,

Spread

Series based football plays are what succeeds in youth football, not the 20 favorite football plays the coach has acquired from coaching or watching TV. If forced to coach something other than the Single Wing, I would use a series based offense that spawned from the Single Wing, which are the Dead T, Markham Double Wing and the Wing T. All are good series based offenses in their own right, but for youth football, the Single Wing has many advantages on each.

The base play series out of each of these offenses you can be run out of the Single Wing. With the Dead T it's the trap, power and keep football plays. You can run each of these plays out of the Single Wing but they are much easier to run without all the difficult QB footwork and the worry of pulling guards running into your running backs and the QB.

In the Double Wing Offense, you have to stop the infamous toss power play off-tackle, FB trap and counter. We have all those football plays in the Single Wing, but again do not have to worry about complex QB footwork and pulling guards running into the QB. I also need 4 pulling linemen with the Double Wing, I only need 1 puller in the Single Wing. I rarely have 2 kids that can pull well, let alone 4.

The Wing T you have to stop the trap/buck sweep, off-tackle and waggle. We have all those plays in the Single Wing and run the waggle off our "T" series Tailback half spin series. Of course with the Wing T and its larger splits the pulling gets tougher and the wedge play is an impossibility to run. You still have all the QB footwork issues and pullers to get out of the way of as you do with the Dead T and Double Wing.

What these three offenses do not offer that the Single Wing has is the full spin series, the most deceptive and difficult to defend series in all of football. The pure deception of having the ability to snap to any of 3 players on every play is something none of the above offenses are capable of. Since we are already in a short shotgun, passing out of the Single Wing is easier as well. Less ball handling means fewer turnovers and the direct snap allows Single Wing teams the ability to get anyone the ball in blowouts that indirect snap teams can't do.

The remaining offenses on the list either require tremendous talent or an inordinate amount of practice time. My favorite offense is the veer, but we don't get to practice 20 hours a week in youth football or have many players to choose from so it's not a viable choice.

It's hard to beat the success the Single Wing has had at the youth football level.

RV Awning Use, Care, Maintenance Tips, and Advice

RV awnings are a great feature to have on your RV. There are different types of RV awnings and they serve different purposes. There are window and door awnings that provide shade over your RV windows or entry door. There are slide out awnings that protect the slide out roof from debris and water. And there are patio awnings that provide us with shade when we want to sit and enjoy the outdoors. The awnings on your RV will provide years of reliable trouble free operation, if you take the time to do a little preventive maintenance and cleaning.

The fabric used on awnings is made from vinyl or acrylic. Some awnings have an aluminum or vinyl wrap-around weather guard that protects the awning fabric when it's in the travel position. When you open the awning for the first time each year, or if it has been stored for a while, you will need to inspect the awning fabric for any signs of mildew or stains. Vinyl awnings will mildew. If the awning fabric is fairly clean, normal cleaning can be accomplished with a soft brush and mild soap and water. Do not use oil based or abrasive cleaners. Clean and thoroughly rinse both sides of the awning. For more difficult stains, or mildew, there are after market commercial cleaners made just for awning fabrics.

Note: Carefully follow all awning and cleaner manufacturer directions.

RV Awning Use, Care, Maintenance Tips, and Advice

Inspect the awning fabric for any tears or excessive wear. Do not store the awning when the fabric is wet. Allow it to dry completely on both sides before storing. You can clean the awning hardware with the same cleaner you use to wash the RV. While the awning is out, inspect the awning hardware. The bottom awning brackets support most of the load from the awning. Check that the lag screws in the awning brackets are tight. Inspect the arm pivot holes for any enlarged holes or broken rivets in the handles. Check for a warped roller tube. If the roller tube is warped it will be noticeable when you roll the awning out. Inspect the end caps for secure mounting and broken rivets.

Caution: Do not attempt to remove the awning end caps. Spring tension can result in serious injury.

Make sure the awning rail is securely mounted to the side of the RV. Have any damaged or broken parts repaired before using the awning. In addition to cleaning and inspecting your awning there are a few things to keep in mind when using the awning. Always lower one end of the awning to allow for water run off. The weight from water pooling on the awning fabric can cause extensive and costly damage.

Wind gusts over 20 miles per hour can also cause extensive damage to the awning and to the RV. Never leave the awning out unattended. If everyone is leaving the campsite, store the awning in the travel position. When you go to bed, store the awning. Even when you are at the campsite, you should use awning tie downs to prevent any sudden damage caused by high wind gusts or a sudden storm. You have the option to position the awning arms straight down and stake them to the ground, but you will get better support if they're attached to the bottom awning brackets on the side of the RV. Remember, it is much easier to prevent damage to your awning than it is to repair it.

4) An-IWB allows integration of audio, video, graphics, text and animation (from wide variety of media like CD-ROM, Internet, intra net, multimedia projector, DVD, VCD, student response system, TV, radio etc) with the lessons. Thus it provides not only enjoyment and interactivity but also makes the learning process much more interesting and fun. It enables teachers to adopt different learning styles to meet the learners' need. Thus it can also help in creating a personalized learning environment.

5) Anything drawn or written on the interactive-whiteboard-surface can be saved on a computer hard disk through a whiteboard-software. In this way teachers can save and share there work and re-used it subsequently in case a repetition is required.

6) Contents from websites, blogs, forums, newsgroups, wikis and other web based resources can be brought on the IWB-surface through a LCD projector. Thus it promotes e-learning.

7) It is an ideal tool for conducting brainstorming sessions and other group activities when used in conjunction with response-systems.

8) It is much easier to use than a conventional desktop-computer or laptop.

9) It is a very powerful teaching tool as: it enhances modeling and presentation, allows teachers to make effective use of classroom-resources, motivates learners, improve communication and can bring in depth clarity on a topic/subject matter.

10) It can also be used for video conferencing, impressive sales presentations, staff training, meetings, briefings, group discussions etc and is thus an excellent ICT product for corporate sector.

Connect PC to TV

How do you connect pc to TV? What are the tools that you need or is there any software necessary to accomplish this?

To have a connection between your pc and TV you would need a cable which would serve as a converter. The cable is a cord which connects to the pc and outputs the image coming from the monitor to the television which the other cable end is connected. This would allow you to watch internet TV or DVD in your pc DVD drive but the viewing would be seen on the TV. It's like making your TV a huge monitor for your pc where you can actually surf the Net, view pictures and many more. If you enjoy home entertainment, or love to watch movies at home, this is the initial move to making a Home Theatre PC.

There are various kinds of PC to TV cables, each function in somewhat dissimilar ways. One of the known differences between cables is the way it is connected to the pc. This can be done on the outputs of the computers video card wherein the monitor is connected. Another cause of differences between cables is the way it is connected to the television; they have types of input connections. The third reason is because some cables serves as converters. A regular PC/TV cable simply directs what's on the pc to the television. But if you have a modernized TV with several enhancement options and your pc is well upgraded, then you might be able to manipulate on how to make the images appear better on the TV screen. If the cable is a converter then the images will automatically be adjusted, meaning you don't need to change any settings on your pc or tv. You simply need to plug the cable and watch the videos. These types of cables usually necessitate a power source like USB port from your pc.

Connect PC to TV

What must you do to connect pc to TV? What you need to do is connect the USB cord of the PC to TV cable into its matching port on your computer. Next is to link the VGA Y-cord's blue connector marked as "PC" to the monitor or VGA port that can be found at the back of your computer. You could either link the composite video which is indicated through a yellow RCA jack or an S-Video which is a pure black 4-pin connection output to an S-Video cable or composite video cable. Not to worry if you lack a video cable as this is easily available at any hardware or electronics store. You must link the VGA monitor cord with the VGA Y-cord's blue connector marked as "monitor". If you are using a laptop then the end connector which is marked as "monitor" cannot be used. You must connect the video cable end with the video input of the TV or projector or any other equipment that you will utilize. You can toggle the input display to match with the input video that you're going to use. With the toggle option you can control the input to display whatever you prefer the tv to display. Each TV differs from the other so you could refer the TV user guide for further instructions. Finally you could turn on the pc and let it boot up for you to see the result.

Eliminating RV Odors

Odors in our RV's come in many different forms, caused by many different sources. There are holding tank odors, pet odors, cooking, smoke, must and mildew odors, just to name a few. Some odors are caused when the RV is put in storage for long periods of time and other odors are caused through normal use of the RV. Our concern is what we can do to prevent some of these odors. I want to tell you about some RV products that I have personally tested and use, available to RVers to help eliminate some of these odors.

Because RV's are small in size, when compared to a home, odors tend to be more pronounced. Add to this that the RV sits, closed up, for periods of time and the odor problems are compounded even more. This leads to one of the key factors to controlling RV odors, ventilation. Ventilation not only helps with odors, but it can limit the amount of heat build-up in the RV too. Many RV owners store their RV's outside and are concerned with leaving windows or vents open, exposing the RV to Mother Nature.

Dvds Tv Series

When I worked for an RV dealership, we installed many MaxxAir® ventilation products designed specifically for RV's. One great feature about these ventilation products is that you can leave the windows and vents open, even when it's raining outside. From the standard vent covers to their powerful MaxxFan, these ventilation products will keep the air moving in your RV. You can see the complete line at http://www.maxxair.com. To view my short MaxxFan® installation video visit http://rveducation101.com/videostream/?clip=MaxxFanInstall.

Eliminating RV Odors

Now, with the ventilation problem solved we can focus on other types of odors that can linger in the RV. These odor molecules aren't just in the air, they get in the fabrics, carpets, ceiling, window treatments and other areas of the RV. Pet odors, smoke, and must and mildew odors can be extremely difficult to remove from an RV. I have witnessed RV interiors that have been professionally cleaned and odors like smoke still remain afterwards. I have also experimented with many different odor controlling products, but perhaps the best product I have found for eliminating difficult odors is called OdorCide by Winston Company. OdorCide is environmentally safe, hypoallergenic, doesn't stain and kills these tough odors instantly. For more information about OdorCide visit http://www.winstoncompany.com.

This brings us to the least favorite topic when discussing RV odors, RV holding tank odors. The good news is there are some very effective methods for controlling these odors too, and it doesn't involve strong chemicals that can be dangerous to humans, pets and septic systems. First it would probably be helpful to explain why we sometimes get a strong odor coming from the RV black water holding tank, especially when you are traveling. RV holding tanks are designed with a vent pipe going from the tank to the roof on the RV. The holding tank odors accumulate in the tank and can't really be vented outside because there is no air pressure to force the gasses (odors) up and out of the vent pipe. The real problem occurs when wind blows across the vent cap on top of the RV roof, or when you're traveling. This higher air pressure forces air down the vent pipe pushing the tank gasses (odors) to the only other way out of the system, the toilet. Whenever the air pressure is higher inside the holding tank, than it is inside the RV, the odor escapes into the RV by way of the toilet.

I'm happy to say that I have found a product that will solve holding tank odor problems that are caused by the design of the RV waste water system. It's called RV-360 and it's a redesigned breather system that attaches to the top of the vent pipe and actually draws the fumes out of the holding tank. It works when the RV is stationary and when it's moving.

Here's how it works. As the wind passes over your rooftop it will direct the RV-360 so that the exhaust port is pointing down wind, away from where the wind is coming from, drawing the tank fumes up and out of the vent pipe. In certain wind conditions, the factory installed vent cap does the opposite and actually forces wind down the vent pipe, pushing holding tank odors back into the RV. The RV-360 always draws the gasses out of the tank. To watch my short installation video on the RV 360 visit http://rveducation101.com/videostream/?clip=360.

Another problem associated with RV holding tank odors is the use of strong chemicals to help control these holding tank odors. Some of these chemicals are dangerous to humans, pets, and the septic systems we empty our holding tanks in to. Because little water is used, in comparison to a domestic waste water system, RV holding tank wastewater is far more concentrated. The organic strength from the mixture in an RV holding tank can be fifteen to twenty times stronger than a typical wastewater system. This problem is compounded when the RVer gets some odors from the holding tank and dumps even more chemicals in the holding tank in an attempt to control the odors.

As many of you, who know my work know; I am a big advocate for saving our RV dump stations. I have discovered a holding tank treatment that is environmentally friendly and safe to use in septic systems. It's called Oxy-Kem, by Winston Company. And it's not just a deodorizer; Oxy-Kem cleans the holding tanks too, up to 500% better than chemical, enzyme and formaldehyde based products. You can use it in the black and gray water holding tanks and it comes in convenient drop in packs, so there's no measuring, waste or mess. The oxygen activated technology actually eliminates RV holding tank odors instantly. For more information on Oxy-Kem visit http://www.winstoncompany.com.

One final note about RV odors: A lot of RVers have a problem with odors in the RV refrigerator when it is not being used, either in between trips or for winter storage. After the freezer compartment defrosts you should clean the refrigerator thoroughly. Leave the refrigerator doors open and place some baking soda or charcoal (the kind you grill with) inside to absorb any odors.

So it's safe to say that with proper ventilation and a few good RV products you can eliminate all of the tough odors commonly associated with RV's.

Happy Camping!
